Annual Book Giveaway

We are proud to give a book to every first grader, first-grade teacher, and librarian at the beginning of each school year. This book is a gift from the Foundation’s Link to Literacy Program. Along with the book, students and families receive information about the important role that parents play in the early literacy process, and suggestions for reading out loud to their children.

Studies show that early reading has a major impact on a student’s understanding, learning, and future success. Reading is a major focus of our Foundation, as it is a critical element in educational development.

The 2018-2019 featured book is Wolf in the Snow by Matthew Cordell. This Caldecott Medal winner follows a girl and a wolf pup lost in a snowstorm and shares the story of how they will make it back home. This beautifully illustrated book will spark imaginations and warm hearts. Cordell worked with Yellowstone Biologists to make sure the storyline was plausible.

Summer Reading Program

The benefits of reading are vast – from improved writing skills to vocabulary development, from mental stimulation to stress reduction.

While our students take a break from school during the summer months, we don’t want a hiatus from reading. Studies show that summer reading loss is significant in grades K-2, but children who live close to a library tend to read more books during the summer.

We are planning a new summer reading program that will provide increased access to local school libraries that will be open during the summer. We will also implement reading incentives to encourage and incentivize students to read 100 books during the summer break.

We are finalizing all the details for this new program, but we plan to implement this during the summer of 2019.
